You’ve decided to invest in a swimming pool. Pictures of sunny days spent frolicking in the water or tanning by the poolside fill your head. But wait! Before diving into those blue waters, you must build your dream pool. How long does a pool install take? Installing a pool can take a few weeks to a few months. It all depends on the pool type, permits and even the weather.

Let’s get into the details so you can start planning your perfect pool!

What Is the Pool Installation Process Timeline?

Between deciding to invest in a pool and enjoying it, several things need to happen. Here’s what you can expect from a typical pool installation timeline:

Design (one to four weeks): Working with pool designers brings your vision to life. They create a custom swimming pool design tailored to your taste, needs and budget. Depending on the complexity, this stage can take one to four weeks.
Permits (two to six weeks): Most cities or counties require permits to build in-ground swimming pools. These may include a building (BLD), electrical (ELE) and engineering (ENG) permit. Your pool contractor can help with this step. Permit approval can take anywhere from two to six weeks.
Excavation (one week): The builders arrive at your home to dig up the site for your pool and lay down a stone foundation. Excavation usually lasts one or two days. It can take up to a week if there are any obstructions or complications.
Steel, electrical and plumbing (one to two weeks): In this phase, the contractors lay steel to support the pool’s walls and floor. They also install conduits for lights and the underground plumbing lines.
Pool installation (one to three weeks): The time has come to install your pool! Prefabricated vinyl and fiberglass pools are quicker to install. A custom gunite concrete pool takes longer because the gunite needs time to cure after the crew sprays the concrete.
Custom features (one to four weeks): If you want a one-of-a-kind pool, you may add extras like a tanning deck, spa or water features. Customization can take a week or more, depending on how many elements you add.
Enjoyment (infinite): Once your dream pool is complete, it’s time to enjoy it for years to come.

When Is the Best Time to Install a Pool?

If you live in sunny Florida, the answer is anytime! Florida’s subtropical climate means homeowners can install a pool all year round. That said, January to March is the sweet spot. Building your pool in early spring means it will be ready to enjoy in the warmer months. Plus, you miss the peak summer heat during construction.
